Peeling the skin's outer layers to expose the newer, smoother skin underneath is done in two ways: chemical peels or microdermabrasion.  The Washington Dermatology Center uses the most current technology for both methods. Microdermabrasion safely exfoliates the skin without either chemicals or laser.

Microdermabrasion utilizes corundum crystals to finely resurface superficial
layers of the skin. When a more aggressive treatment is necessary, the
vacuum pressure can be increased to evenly penetrate deeper layers of skin.
